I had to add to this blog to share some of Shamara's experiences with the men - especially in Aswan.
The Egyptian men love Shamara. They want her to be their mother (!), wife or both! They want to talk to her, touch her and generally look at her. They feel the need to engage with her in some way. Their fascination is quite obvious as they try to get deeper and deeper into conversation.
They say things like "Your Nubian?" (the darker egyptians from further south), or "Hello India!!", "Namaste", or just stand close and ask "where you from?". They quickly say "You my colour" or "Hello sister" or "hello cousin" just to get closer.
Some have asked me how much (or how many camels) she cost me. They say "You very lucky man". Some have said "How much you want for her?". They don't hide their feelings and say things like, "She very beautiful" and call her Cleopatra.
Some have started talking to her in Arabic/Nubian, mistaking her for one of them, and must feel she is approachable because she is their colour but not wearing a scarf, or hijab (veil) and is showing her face and wonderful hair.
Anyway, she's quite an attraction and sometimes uses it to get a better deal in the shops and markets. ... so I quietly put up with it.
A COMMENT FROM SHAMARA:
Okay so now I'm suitably embarrassed ... and he does not "quietly put up with it"... when they ask him how many camels for me or say "I take her home with me?" he says things like "I need her to cook for me"!!
The other day he put his arm around me (very possessive for my Ben!) and this guy took the opportunity to take a photo which I totally refused to pose for. Anyway, often it's his fault as he disappears in the markets (just like back home) and so they think I'm travelling alone so I've had a couple of guys who've asked me for a kiss... one was a tad sleazy ... but the other was a young boy of 18. Then I have to say "My husband won't like it" and point to him...
Fun and games!!
Anyway, I know where they appreciate curves now!!!
